For standard wiring, a fuse or current protector will safely react in the event of a short circuit or phase to ground connection. However, connecting the shore power ground cable to the metal parts of the boat creates undesirable electro galvanic corrosion. If only the phase and working neutral are brought into the ship without a ground, a dangerous situation of non-functional current protection and circuit breakers arises in case of short circuit of the metal parts of the ship.
Electrogalvanic corrosion occurs in situations where two dissimilar metals are electrically connected and simultaneously exposed to an electrically conductive liquid, which is, for example, water, especially sea water. In general, the less noble metal corrodes (degrades) more, while the more noble metal is cathodically protected and corrosion on it is not as rapid. The rate of galvanic corrosion depends on a number of factors such as the ratio of the surface area of the two metals, the conductivity of the liquid, the temperature, etc.
It is a mistake to assume that galvanic corrosion only affects metal (including aluminium) hulls. In fact, it affects all metal parts that come into contact with water (shaft, steps, etc.). Galvanic corrosion quickly dissolves any sacrificial anodes and then has a significant negative effect on metals below the waterline when the boat is connected to an offshore power source. Addressing the elimination of galvanic corrosion by disconnecting the ground cable is extremely dangerous because the electrical protections may not function as they should.
The best way to safely prevent electro galvanic corrosion is to use a decoupling transformer to connect the boat to an offshore AC power source. The transformer eliminates any electrical connection between the shore and the boat. The shore current is fed to the primary side of the transformer. The ship's own electrical system is then connected to the secondary side. The isolation transformer perfectly isolates the ship from the grounding on the shore side of the connection and at the same time supplies the ship with the necessary electrical power. All protected metal parts of the boat must be connected to the working neutral of the outlet (secondary side of the transformer - the entrance to the boat). Only in this way will the ship's current protection and fuses operate safely in the event of a short circuit.
Toroidal winding technology is used for minimal winding noise and high efficiency. The soft inrush of the electric current in the isolating transformer ensures that the current-limited circuit breaker in the power connection in the marina or camping site will not trip when large appliances with large current surges are connected.
For safety, it is recommended to connect the working neutral of the secondary side of the transformer (boat) to shore ground when the boat will be out of the water.
